How a Tidy Space Can Enhance Mental Wellbeing.
Some time ago, I could vividly recall standing in line at a financial institution. Other than being on the phone I decided to “people-watch.” I could not help observing the gentleman two spaces in front of me accidentally dropping a clump of what seemed like a tissue from his pocket. Instantly he bent over and retrieved the unwanted piece of paper from the tidy floor, found the trash, and disposed of it. Coincidentally, it was about forty-five minutes later after exiting the institution I encountered the same gentleman within an area close to St John’s walking on the sidewalk. Just as I was fascinated with the thought of encountering that random gentleman twice within the hour, I observed again that this time he was finishing up a soda and the next move was tossing the soda can by the sidewalk. Surrounding his soda can were other soda cans and even tissues. The takeaway from that experience/observation caused me to think about the subconscious associations persons can have with clean environments as opposed to chaotic or dirty environments. How psychologically he adapted to differing spaces based on the order it represented. In a world filled with constant distractions and overwhelming demands, maintaining a tidy space can be a powerful tool for enhancing mental wellness. Cluttered environments often contribute to stress, anxiety, and reduced productivity, whereas an organized space promotes a sense of calm, focus, and overall well-being. The psychological impact of clutter can create visual and mental chaos, making it difficult to concentrate and process information efficiently. Studies suggest that excessive clutter increases cortisol levels, the stress hormones, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. When our surroundings are disorderly, our minds can feel similarly disorganized. Here are some five benefits when our spaces are tidy and in order.
Some ways we can benefit from a tidy space are stress and anxiety reduction. A clean and organized environment can help lower stress levels and create a sense of control. It can also allow us to enhance focus and productivity. With fewer distractions, it becomes easier to concentrate and complete tasks efficiently. Order and tidiness improve sleep quality, a decluttered bedroom promotes relaxation and contributes to better sleep hygiene. When it comes to our mood and motivation, an orderly space can create a positive atmosphere, leading to improved mood and motivation. Intentionality and mindfulness are two powerful factors promoted by a tidy environment. Decluttering fosters a sense of mindfulness, helping individuals become more intentional about the items they keep and their overall lifestyle. In conclusion here are five practical steps to declutter.
1.
Start Small – Begin with a single drawer or section of a room to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
2.
Adopt the One-Year Rule – If you haven’t used an item in the past year, consider donating or discarding it.
3.
Create a System – Use storage solutions and designated spaces to maintain organization.
4.
Practice Daily Maintenance – Spend a few minutes each day tidying up to prevent clutter from accumulating.
5.
Embrace Minimalism – Focus on keeping items that serve a purpose or bring joy.
Decluttering is more than just a physical task—it is an act of self-care. By creating a tidy space, we foster an environment that supports mental clarity, emotional well-being, and a greater sense of peace. In embracing simplicity, we open the door to a more mindful and fulfilling life.
