The Power of Self Love

February is often called the “Love Month.” It is a time when people share their love for others through thoughts, words, and deeds, especially on February 14th, Valentine’s Day. Yet, constantly putting others before yourself can lead to a lack of self-love. There is power in loving yourself. It is not narcissism; it is not a selfish act; it is a selfless act.

Self-love is important for both your physical and mental health. It involves valuing who you are and treating yourself with kindness, compassion, and respect. Self-love looks different for each person. According to the Behavior and Brain Research Foundation, “Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological, and spiritual growth. Self-love means having a high regard for your own well-being and happiness. Self-love means taking care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. Self-love means not settling for less than you deserve.” Again, it is a selfless act and not selfish.

When you are too hard on yourself and neglect to love yourself, your mental and physical health may suffer. Physically, you may experience fatigue, unhealthy eating, high blood pressure, or other illnesses. Mentally, you may experience unhealthy relationships, high levels of stress and anxiety, depression, suicidal tendencies, etc. Thus, you must be deliberate in what you think about yourself, what you say to yourself, and what you do for yourself. It is important to begin practicing self-love daily.

You should spend a moment each day, not only practicing self-care, but also practicing self-love. According to Psychology Today, there are several ways to cultivate self-love. You can begin by being mindful of how you think, what you feel, and what you want for yourself. Stay focused on your needs, not simply your wants. Practice self-care and set appropriate boundaries. Be aware of who you allow in your life and protect your peace at all times. It is not unheard of to be very hard on yourself, experience self-doubt, or low self-esteem, so forgiving yourself is key. Finally, living each day intentionally is a hallmark to self-love. So love yourself with no judgement, fear, or negativity. Speak positive affirmations to reshape your mindset. Today look in the mirror and tell the person looking back, “I Love You Just the Way You Are!”

When it comes to self-love, William Shakespeare said it best – “To Thine Own Self Be True.”
